20.The Book Of Eli (Ene. 15) – “El libro de los secretos”
Pero But Gary Oldman también lo desea, and he’s got a rocket launcher, among other things.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKfZrbS79To
19.The Lovely Bones (Ene. 15)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikUWKi0W5_g
18.Legion (Ene. 25)
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8lGCjd9W8U
17. The Wolfman (Feb. 12)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKn_RbCAAek
16. The Crazies (Feb. 26)

15. Hot Tub Time Machine ( Marzo 19)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DCFPS58KYY
14. Repo Men (Abril 2)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5lQEI8Xtmk
13. Kick-Ass (Abril 16)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrKHu2UX1vA
12. A Nightmare On Elm Street (Abril 30)

TRailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AytCMB0YW8
11. Iron Man 2 (May 7)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siQgD9qOhRs
10 . Jonah Hex (Jun 18)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_FfHA5whXc
08. The Last Airbender – Avatar La Leyenda de Aang (July 2)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W1dhqc-JBs
07. Despicable Me (Jul 9)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpM7c0uGTes
06. Predators (Jul 9)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HilwtqaN4Gs
04. Priest (Agosto 20)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiZSPgO1YvI
02. Tron Legacy (Dic 7)

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKHqtPxA_dU
01. The Green Hornet (Dic 22)

The Lovely Bones (Jan. 15)
What it’s about: Peter Jackson adapts Alice Sebold’s novel about a young girl who gets murdered by a pedophile, and then finds herself in a kind of purgatory.
Why we’re pumped: Our early review, from horror/SF writer John Shirley, praised this movie’s mixture of surrealism and suspense. Dali meets Hitchcock, from the man who made a Lord Of The Rings adaptation work — what’s not to be excited about?
Legion (Jan. 22)
What it’s about: A group of humans under siege in a truckstop discover their attackers are angels, sent to destroy one pregnant woman whose child has a huge destiny. Only one fallen angel (Paul Bettany) can save them all.
Why we’re pumped: Maybe we’re just in the throes of Supernatural withdrawal, but this story of morally compromised angels and Armageddon seems like perfect cheesy fun. The clips we’ve seen so far are pleasingly violent, and supernatural mayhem in a truckstop seems like a recipe for good times.
The Wolfman (Feb. 12)
What it’s about: Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins star in this revival of Universal’s monster movie franchise, about a man who becomes… wait for it… a wolf.
Why we’re pumped: Well, it’s got to be better than Jack Nicholson. Actually, the trailer was pretty thrilling and promised some old-school horror schlock. The reshoots may actually have helped to give the film more of an edge. And Anthony Hopkins is playing Malcolm McDowell! So why not?
The Crazies (Feb. 26)
What it’s about: Did you know they were remaking George Romero’s 1970s classic about a town of people infected with a disease that makes them go nuts? The military decides to barricade everyone in the town, and craziness ensues.
Why we’re pumped: The trailer is actually pretty fantastic, and the stills do look pretty batshit. And apparently it’s about the American Dream gone wrong. Oh whatever, there will be small-town people hacking each other to pieces.
Hot Tub Time Machine ( March 19)
What it’s about: A gaggle of middle-aged guys (including John Cusack and the Daily Show’s Rob Corddry) discover that their hot tub is really a time machine that lets them go back to their party-boy youth in the 1980s and do it all over again. Or something.
Why we’re pumped: We talked to Cusack about this film, and it sounded like he and his costars had a lot of fun doing improv and writing the script as they went along. And you know, every time Corddry got in a hot tub or got immersed in any type of liquids on The Daily Show, it was funny.
Repo Men (April 2)
What it’s about: As we mentioned, this one was filmed a while ago and put on ice, until Repo Man director Alex Cox decided to do his own spin-off, Repo Chick. But it’s not actually connected to Repo Man at all — it’s a movie version ofa novel, Repossession Mambo, about a future where your artificial organs get yanked out if you don’t keep up with your payments.
Why we’re pumped: The original novel, by Eric Garcia, got a rave review over at SFSignal. The recently released redband trailer was fun, and it’s got Jude Law ripping your organs out.
Kick-Ass (April 16)
What it’s about: Mark Millar’s brutal comic about what superheroes would really be like gets a faithful adaptation from Matthew Vaughn (Stardust) featuring Nic Cage as a psycho version of Batman who pumps bullets into his 11-year-old girl, Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz).
Why we’re pumped: Given how many comic-book movies feel neutered or sanitized, it’s hard not to feel a bit thrilled at the prospect of a film that brings the wrongness. And each still or trailer has just increased our anticipation for this movie’s ultra-violence and Millar’s trademark snarky misanthropy.
A Nightmare On Elm Street (April 30)
What it’s about: Jackie Earle Haley stars as Freddie Krueger, the serial killer with the knife-glove, who kills people in their dreams, resulting in their deaths in real life. This is another film that’s been having a ton of reshoots, and there are rumors it’s a bit troubled.
Why we’re pumped: Haley was pretty great as Rorschach in Watchmen, and we’re always game to see him play another psychopath.
Iron Man 2 (May 7)
What it’s about: The sequel to 2008’s most pleasant surprise, a superhero film that sported interesting characters and memorable performances. Robert Downey Jr. is back as Tony Stark, and this time the U.S. military wants the Iron Man “weapon” he’s created. But he’s going to need that suit to survive Mickey Rourke’s zappy-whip assault.
Why we’re pumped: Iron Man really was a cut above most superhero films, thanks to a mixture of body horror (his heart is battery powered) and wry humor. We’re hoping that the “superhero sequel clutter” problem doesn’t drag this film down, and Downey and director Jon Favreau can recapture the magic.
Jonah Hex (June 18)
What it’s about: A gunslinger in the old West battles supernatural evil, based loosely on the DC Comics series.
Why we’re pumped: We were startled by how exciting our glimpse of this film at Comic Con turned out to be — the footage was frenetic and surreal, with vampires bursting out of the Earth and Jonah Hex barfing up a crow. We were left wanting much more, to our amazement.
Toy Story 3 (June 18)
What it’s about: The long-awaited third installment in the series about sentient playthings picks up when the toys’ owner goes off to college — and not all of the toys are going to get to stay.
Why we’re pumped: The first two films were nearly flawless and built up a great mythology of the toys’ metafictional universes. And we’re dying for more Buzz Lightyear catch phrases.
The Last Airbender (July 2)
What it’s about: M. Night Shyamalan adapts the super-popular animated series about Aang, who has power over the element of air and tries to save his world from the warlike Fire Nation.
Why we’re pumped: We loved the animated series, and our visit to this film’s set was pretty encouraging. Shyamalan has long since used up his last dregs of good will, but at least this time he’s working with great source material, and he seems to be taking it seriously. And maybe a change of pace is what he’s needed.
Despicable Me (July 9)
What it’s about: Steve Carrell voices the supervillain Gru, who wants to remain the worst evildoer on Earth. (This is actually just one of two animated supervillain movies coming out this year, with the other one, Megamind, coming out towards the end of the year and starring Will Ferrell.)
Why we’re pumped: Carrell seems like a good choice to play a bumbling supervillain, and the trailer contains lots of superheroic slapstick. Could be fun. At least it’s not Ferrell.
Predators (July 9)
What it’s about: Producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimrod Antal relaunch the series about aliens who hunt humans for sport, this time on an alien planet where a few humans are kidnapped and forced to fight for their lives.
Why we’re pumped: If anybody can make Predators cool again, it’s the man who gave us Planet Terror. This is based on the Predator script Rodriguez wrote years ago, so it’s a passion project for him. And yet, the casting of Adrien Brody and Topher Grace makes us very, very nervous.
Inception (July 16)
What it’s about: Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) brings us an original science-fiction story, in which cities melt and Ellen Page screams “Wake me up!”
Why we’re pumped: It’s Nolan, doing what looks like a riff on The Matrix. And we’re glad he’s taking a break from Bat-movies to do something original and — hopefully — thought-provoking. This might be the film we’re most eager to discover more about in 2010.
Priest (August 20)
What it’s about: Paul Bettany, our new go-to guy for supernatural action, stars in an adaptation of the TokyoPop comic set in a world where vampires and humans have been at war for decades. Bettany is a warrior priest who defies orders and goes after some vampires who have kidnapped his niece.
Why we’re pumped: It’s got post-apocalyptic violence, deadly vampires, and Bettany inflicting more supernatural violence. Plus what we saw of the comic was pretty great.
Red Dawn (November 24)
What it’s about: Chinese and Russian troops attack a small town in America, and the town’s teenagers are the only ones who can mount a defense, in this remake of the 1980s classic.
Why we’re pumped: It’s a weird mixture of apocalyptic and alternate history, but this film’s early photos showing the American town plastered with scary signs in Chinese and Russian got us all pumped.
Tron Legacy (December 17)
What it’s about: Disney finally makes a sequel to the 1980s video-game classic, and Jeff Bridges is back, playing his original character as well as a (possibly evil) computerized version.
Why we’re pumped:The new footage of lightcycles at Comic Con 2008 blew our brains out, and every glimpse since then has just gotten us more stoked. And Bridges seems to be one of those actors who really does make everything he’s in better, so two versions of Bridges seems like a good bet.
The Green Hornet (December 22)
What it’s about: Another troubled production, this adaptation of the classic radio and TV superhero serial lost its director and co-star Stephen Chow. Seth Rogen’s still on board playing the newspaperman whose super-sidekick is more famous than he is.
Why we’re pumped: Really only one reason: Michel Gondry. The director of some of our favorite films of the past decade stepped in to replace Chow, and this instantly flew to the top of our must-see list, even if Gondry hadn’t sealed the deal by rapping about it.

I watched The Lovely Bones a few nights ago and it is worth mentioning that the visuals are definitely stunning parts. The story is fairly decent as well, although the ending shocked me by shitting a giant brick and turning into a trashy romance novel.
I checked and found the book had the same ending…. so at least it’s not Jackson’s fault…. but jesus its jolting and it ruined the story for me.

I’ve got to give Predator a chance, just because there’s a guy called Nimrod involved. I mean, come on – he’s referred to as “A mighty hunter before the Lord”.

Robert Rodriguez is a horrible filmmaker and Planet Terror was lame even as parody. It’s no surprise that Machete was the best thing about his segment because his attention span won’t allow him to sustain an idea for a full movie. Look for this to fall apart midway through despite the use of one of the most dependable plots in the world: The Most Dangerous game.

Hitchcock and Dali already met.
Hugely excited about Green Hornet against all available evidence, in love with Inception and Kick-Ass and curious about Repo Men, but ugh, vote no on Lovely Bones. Totally flat and uninteresting, and the only character they develop is the one you don’t have any connection with i.e. the dead girl.
Also, no Scott Pilgrim?

I saw a preview for Lovely Bones at our local indie theater awhile ago and it looked absolutely amazing. I saw a preview on TV yesterday and they are marketing it completely different, with no mention of the surreal visuals and pumping it as a “SOLVE THE MURDER” movie. I’m glad I saw the first trailer, because I would have no interest in the movie based on the TV trailer.

Why is everyone so worried about Adrien Brody and Topher Grace? Grace I kind of get, but only because I haven’t seen any of his post 70s Show work. But Brody seems inspired to me. And I’d still rather have Grace over whoever’s this gen’s Ahnold.

I really want The Last Airbender to be good, but I have so little faith in M. Night that I’m consciously tempering my excitement. Also, I’m disturbed by the white-washing of some of the characters. That just seems like a strange move, considering that the show already has a built-in fan base.

@atrus123: I understand the “whitewashing” comment but, really, how ethnic were the characters in the series? I’ve watched it (twice) start to finish, and never thought about the ethnics of any of the characters, except some of the oldsters, which were drawn pretty ethnically.

@core53mail003: Well, for example, I think we can say that Katara and Sokka (and the southern Water Tribe as a whole) are pretty evidently based on Eskimo cultures. There’s little Anglo about their culture or customs. And yet, the two actors they got to play those characters are as white as snow, as if they’re straight out of Lake Woebegone.
To be clear, I think Katara and Sokka are the only real examples of the whitewashing, so I’m not that disturbed, but it does leave a slightly bitter taste in my mouth.

@atrus123: Understood. And agree in principal. But, honestly, watching the series I never really applied any ethnics to anyone. They all — again, except for the older characters and maybe a few spot characters — talked with the same inflection, etc., so when I heard there was a bit of controversy regarding casting, it surprised me.
That aside, the first teaser I saw made me quite happy, esp when I saw the Fire Nation ships coating the horizon.
And Cameron be damned, I wanted this called Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Last Airbender alone works, but I hope they say “he’s the Avatar” a jillion times in the movie.

The unfortunate fact about M Night is that he doesn’t make movies for the majority, he makes them for a dedicated minority who understand that there are deeper meanings in his movies.
I will not make the claim that his movies are perfect. I will say that they are flawed pieces of art.
On a side note, if the book in The Book of Eli happens to be the Bible or a copy of the US constitution, I’m going to fly down to Hollywood and kick someone in the face.

@theblazeuk: No, the constitution is a small book. The Declaration of Independence is more of a big page (I’m guessing that’s what you’re thinking of).
I admit, if Denzel is carrying around a large book, then I’m out $10… unless the book also includes things like the Articles of Confederation, the Federalist Papers, the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, Paine’s Common Sense, etc….

@atrus123: ahh yes, it all makes sense now.
Phones are hard to come by, as are Pizza Huts, hence all the walking. Gary Oldman desperately wants a pizza of his own, so naturally he becomes Eli’s mortal enemy. Eli himself wants that pizza more than anything, so the action scenes are more than just action scenes – they are a brutal reflection of man’s struggle to get him some tasty stuffed crust pizza. Brilliant!

@sakeido: I think we just came up with Pizza Hut’s new ad campaign surrounding the movie. I can see the commercials now. They’d all end with a money shot of Denzel stuffing his face and cheese dripping down his chin.
“Now that’s a piece of pizza worth fighting for.”

This list should be expanded some because there are quite a few movies missing that I am surprised are not on it.
Oh and just to point out, Aang is a Airbender that can control all four elements, not just air. The Last Airbender is likely going to suck shit since M. Night shouldn’t be allowed to direct infomercials, the teaser and characters all look ridiculous compared to the cartoon.

@Jesse Astle: You are so clever, I hope my kids wit is as awesome as yours when they get older since mine is clearly no match. I would like to go the route of not having any faith whatsoever in M. Night’s ability to make a movie while you obviously seem to be some sort of fan.
His track record pretty much locks the fact that he is going to fuck TLA to no end and his casting choices and the lone teaser that has been released almost locks that theory down. If he removes any one aspect of the series then he takes away all of it because it was the flawless combination of those things that made it so great. If you’re a fan of the ‘toon then you have to question his judgement and ability to handle such an awesome responsiblity when he can barely make his own movies enjoyable.
As for Batman 3 I was just tossing around ideas with Chris the other day and we have some pretty solid ideas going. I can’t say much but it’s going to be good and the test footage that’s been going down in super secret is off the hook. You know what the best part about the movie is, are you ready? Batman won’t even be in it! I know it’s fucking insane, Chris Nolan is a genius! There won’t be any villains either, it’s just going to be Alfred lamenting the fact that he is all alone and Gotham is falling to shit.

@Makidian: Well yes, I am a fan of M Night. He makes interesting, if not flawed, movies. His excrement is more interesting than the majority of movies I’ve seen. Even if I wasn’t a fan I’d be objective enough to know that a) he knows how to shoot a good scene and b) this is a completely different type of movie than what he has done before. He’ll probably have a lot more oversight than he has had on any other movie. Which I would agree may not be a bad thing.
As for Batman 3, that sounds freaking awesome! I can really see Alfred being fleshed out as a character.

The two animated films, and possibly the hot tub one plus Inception are all I have time for from this lot.
Remaking “A Nightmare on Elm Street” is up there with the remake of “Psycho.” The original is already the perfect example of its period and type and simply doesn’t need to be updated. I’d even argue that the special effects have aged fairly well.

Wow, this just drives home the point that Hollywood has plain run out of new ideas and/or completely lacks the balls to do something original.
Lets see, Nightmare, Tron, RED DAWN?? If its not a reboot, its a sequel or adaptation. Apparently Inception and Dispicable are the only new things. How pathetic. TV truly is the new movies.

“about a future where your artificial organs get yanked out if you don’t keep up with your payments.”
…can I assume people have artificial organs because of mass organ failure?
if so
*watches trailer*
*deletes most of comment*
very different plot line from REPO: the Genetic Opera, but I can’t ignore that the premise is the same
~people need organs
~Huge company finances organs
~people can’t keep up with payments
~yadda yadda yadda
~cept with music
[www.repo-opera.com]
and yes, there are numerous organ-removing scenes (while singing mind you)
except with Anthony Stewart Head instead of Jude Law
[www.metacafe.com]
and no, I’m not against this film at all. I think this general plot concept is awesome, and am happy to see a non-musical take on the idea.
cuz very few of my friends enjoyed REPO because of the music… ![]()

@Madparse: As much as I want to agree with this, it really doesn’t have much to do with the movie itself, but rather the state of Hollywood in general. Producers actively refuse to back films that cast asians as main characters… even when common sense would make you think otherwise.
In the end boycotting the movie only ensures no future Last Airbender movies will ever see production.
At this point, the damage is done. They aren’t going to recast and reshoot a film that is already in the can. If anything, people should GO TO THE FILM WEARING THE PROTEST SHIRT to promote awareness of unfair hiring practices in the movie industry.
That way, you aren’t screwing the franchise or creator… but still get to actively promote a very good cause. Not by boycotting… as the movie industry lumps boycotters in the same group as pirates (ticket sales they’ll never get)… but as paying customers.

I remember the original poster, which was the exact same poster, except with no weapons in his hands.
Then, I’m assuming some fuckwit at the studio said “he doesn’t look threatening enough! @betty.black: Oh, I forgot about Parnassus. And I see The Lovely Bones as more of a paranormal fantasy than urban fantasy. It may take place in a suburb of Philadelphia, but is the setting really central to the story? To the point where the town is a character? The same with a movie like Paranormal Activity, which io9 has covered before. Or Harry Potter, which has been covered on numerous occasions. I see urban fantasy as being too of a limiting qualification for everything io9 covers that isn’t directly sci-fi.

@EdificeComplex: I read the book a while back. To me, the setting was indeed an integral part of the book, because it was so … suburban and highschool-y. Maybe it’s because I live in the same general vicinity as where the book was based (from the roads and other landmarks, it was clearly Valley Forge/King of Prussia), but I couldn’t separate the locale from the story. I wouldn’t call it “urban fantasy” – maybe suburban fantasy?
It will be interesting to see how the film adapts the book. I found the book a somewhat engaging read until the end, when the plot took an epically frustrating turn off the road and deep into the brambles.

@dnwilliams: Dick Turpin was a real, specific individual in history. We know when he was born and when he died. His story as a highwayman wasn’t romanticized until the 19th century.
Whereas figures like King Arthur and Robin Hood are most likely amalgamations of numerous individuals. Most historians believe “Robin Hood” was an alias used by several outlaws over the course of centuries. I see there being a difference between an actual historical figure and legends which have changed so much throughout history as to be in the realm of fantasy.

@EdificeComplex: Okay…that definition *is* a bit *too* fluid though. Magic or something like it is implicit in the use of the genre term Fantasy.

@dnwilliams: I can concede that. It is casting Fantasy as a wide net. I’m sure there is a thesis project in there about where folklore ultimately lies on the continuum between mythology and fantasy.

Oh man Predators comes out this summer? Didn’t they just nail down a director? Is this another case of Rodriguez rushing the hell out a production that a little bit of time and finesse could make a really winner film.
And is Inception actually sci-fi or is it just all wibbly wobbly mindey-windey?

@Garrison Dean: R.O.A.C.H.: As the blurb mentions, I think Rodriguez already had a script ready, which I suspect is cause for most films long overall production schedules (especially with 27 re-writes). Once you have that, and a director/producer who knows what’s he’s doing, I think it can go pretty quickly.

@Garrison Dean: R.O.A.C.H.: Well it IS Robert Rodriguez.
I’m pretty sure that the guy takes no more than 2 weeks to shoot any movie and then he just edits and scores the entire thing the morning after and puts it in the can before making a lunch of Puerco Pibil.

@dnwilliams: Dr. Who is wibbly wobbly timey-wimey, not wibbly wobbly mindey-windey. Also i could care less about the script for a Predator film, i’m just terrified of Adrian Brody and Topher Grace! They just say “I should be in an arthouse or teaching high school english” and instead they’ll be fighting aliens! GAWD!

@TheDarkWayne: There was a time when I didn’t care about scripts for action movies. I could go see Transformers 2 and GI Joe and watch things blow up without a care in the world. I was even able to barely tolerate AvP:2 (or R? can’t remember) because of it’s rampant gore and violence.
Then, one day recently I had an experience that shocked me to my core. An action film so big, so full of spectacle, spaceships, aliens, and guns but a script so terrible and monotonous that I didn’t even care that things were blowing up! It made me question my whole belief system when it comes to movies. I have been barely able to cope since it happened and every time I see the color blue or papyrus fonts I roll up into a ball and quiver. My wife and I went out for Thai Food at the Blue Ginger and they had to take me away screaming after I looked at the sign.

@TheDarkWayne: Worse? it’s all relative to me and that is the problem I have.
AVPR didn’t have a script it was just 30 minutes of teens talking and then a 50 minute long Red Band trailer for a really awesome Aliens vs. Predator film that doesn’t exist.
But TF2 and GI-JOE knew that they were in it for the explosions and made no bones about it.
Avatar tried very hard to be something it wasn’t and failed miserably. To me it was on par with The Phantom Menace. Something that made me question all the previous work of artist that I had really loved.
I just hit a point in Avatar about 20 minutes in where I just said… “I just don’t care”. I cared more about that stupid humping comic relife RC car in TF2 than anything in Avatar.
I’m not calling you stupid. It was a lovely film, and if you want to enjoy it on that level feel free. But it was hollow. If you want feel free to read my review and berate me on my blog. I do try to rationalize it and not just say “It wuz teh sux”

I’m surprised Alice in Wonderland didn’t make the cut, though that’s not to say I’m necessarily looking forward to it. Just that everyone else seems super excited about it.
I’d put The A-Team instead of Lovely Bones, though, and add Clash of the Titans and Expendables somewhere.

@Charlie Jane Anders: I for one would like to thank io9 for not talking about Clash of the Titans. I recently went to a lunch with my friends where they all were talking about how excited they were to see it, and wouldn’t it be better than the original, and Terminator Salvation was great so Titans would have to be great because of Worthington.
I felt so isolated and alone.

If you can include biblical armageddon fantasy (which I hear encompasses Book of Eli as well as Legion), then Roman gods should get their due. And obviously, you are forgetting Bubo the mechanical owl–if mechanical birds aren’t robots, then what is??

Still, who do I talk to at Gawker about a “high fantasy” site, then? It can cover all the stuff like Clash that isn’t covered here then. It could cover fantasy books, TV, movies, and games, Dragon Con and Ren Faires, costuming, medieval-themed articles, and more. Is there no audience for this?
